Desaru International Bike Week at Desaru Coast, Johor is an international motorcycle gathering and festival that offers participants an extended weekend get-away brimming with plenty of sun, beaches, bikes, activities and fun!

One of the greatest motorcycling spectacles events in Malaysia will hit the 29km beach of Desaru and surrounding this September as Desaru Coast will be the key venue. The thunderous sound of loud pipes from the thousands of big and small bikes literally creating sensation in your chest as 50,000 motorcycle enthusiast, local and international clubs and visitors rolled through the southland of Johor Darul Ta’zim to gather and celebrate the 1st Desaru International Bike Week (DIBW) 2019.

BON ODORI


Bon Odori, also known as Obon, is a major traditional summer festival observed by Japanese worldwide for over 500 years. Although it is mainly celebrated by the Japanese, this festival has gained popularity among tourists and locals not just in Johor Bahru but other parts of the world too. Join in the fun and immerse in the Japanese culture while learning more about the Bon Odori festival from the Japanese students and expatriates staying in Johor Bahru. The festival is to pay homage to the spirits of one’s ancestors and is quite similar to that of Chinese’s Ching Ming Festival.


The festival held in the city is organised by the Japan Graduates Association of Malaysia (JAGAM) Southern branch of Johor. Although it is considered a religious event in Japan, the festival at Johor Bahru is more cultural. 
There are various activities you can take part in during the two-day festival, such as martial arts and traditional music performances, cosplay and more. 

Apart from that, you can also try some Japanese food and drinks and view the crafts and arts. The major crowd puller is dancing on the street and many dancers will be decked in the stunning traditional Japanese kimono.

JOHOR INTERNATIONAL DRAGON BOAT REGATTA

800 participants from all around the globe are expected to flock to Kota Tinggi, Johor!



Jointly organised with Harlie Venture, Johor Tourism will be hosting the very 1st Johor International Dragon Boat Regatta at Laman Tun Sri Lanang, Sungai Johor, Kota Tinggi, Johor, on 27th to 28th April 2019 from 8am to 6pm.





There are 8 categories to be competed in the 200 metres length of the Sungai Johor. These include International Premier Men with a crew of 12, International Premier Men 6’s, International Premier Women 6’s, International Premier Mix 12’s, International Masters Open 12’s (crew members’ birth year to qualify is 1979 and below), International Premier Junior Men 12’s (crew members’ birth year to qualify is in between 1996 to 2006) and Malaysia Closed Government Agencies Mix 12’s (army included).



The event would see a qualifying round for Women 6’s category to represent Malaysia for the coming SEA Games 2019 to be held in Manila, Philippines from November to December. Malaysia Canoe Association (MASCA) would be judging the selection on 27th April 2019.




800 people from 35 teams including locals and internationals have registered for the competition. Besides Malaysia and other ASEAN countries, there are also teams from Canada, Hong Kong, the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, Zimbabwe and the Netherlands.


The 1st International Dragon Boat Regatta is looking at promoting Johor as an international host for water sports as well as stimulating the local’s economic growth by keeping the accommodation for the competitors within the proximity of the event’s venue.

KEMBARA MAHKOTA JOHOR



This royal event has been one of the state's most iconic event where Johorean from all walks of life set to meet the royal family up close and personal.

Is an annual royal motorcycle tour program held by the state government of Johor, Malaysia under the direction of the Sultan of Johor, Tunku Ibrahim Ismail. The royal expedition is participated by a group of motorcyclists led by Tunku Ibrahim Ismail himself, travelling over hundreds of kilometers through all 10 districts of Johor.

SULTAN Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar departs riding the high power motocycle of Harley-Davidson 2019 Road King Special Touring Bike' for the 22nd Kembara Mahkota Johor 2019 at the Pelangi Palace in Johor.

The Kembara Mahkota Johor is held to enable Tunku Ibrahim Ismail to meet with fellow Johoreans as well as to provide charity for the poor. 


The commitment of the Johoreans seen through presentations of performance and various events drawn at each stopover locations throughout the county in the state. It includes events such as sports, cultural performances and others to celebrate the arrival of His Majesty, the beloved (DYMM).

The program is a pride which is, it allow the people of all parts of the district to have the opportunity to meet the sultan and relatives of Johor. At the same time, the public can mingle with the leaders state and head of government in exploring the development needs of the people in the areas visited.


The Kembara Mahkota Johor is a brainchild of Tunku Ibrahim Ismail, then the Crown Prince (Tunku Mahkota) of Johor, due to his desire to meet with fellow Johoreans and provide charity to the poor. According to him, during the feudal age, the king or the crown prince rode an elephant to travel all over the state for the same reason as the Kembara Mahkota Johor.

The royal tour debuted on 2 July 2001, participated by a group of 28 motorcyclists led by the Tunku Mahkota himself and covered all 8 districts (now 10 districts) in Johor, with the total distance of 870 km. During the tour, Tunku Ibrahim Ismail is famous for riding his trademark Harley-Davidson motorcycle with the "tiger stripe"-painted body. However, the 2002 edition of the tour was the only tour that he did not ride his Harley-Davidson motorcycle - instead, all participants rode the Modenas Jaguh motorcycle as Modenas became one of the main sponsor for the 2002 Kembara Mahkota Johor.


During the journey, Sultan is get to the ground and meet the people. He will take part in cooking demonstrations, sporting events and visit exhibition venues and stalls. He will also present donations to communities in need of aid.

For Kembara Mahkota Johor 2019, Sultan and his entourage would on the first leg of the journey, leave from the palace to the Pontian district after which they move on to Batu Pahat, Tangkak and Muar covering a 240-Km stretch.

On the second day, Sultan Ibrahim will continue the expedition from Istana Muar to Segamat and then to Kluang and Mersing.

The final leg of the journey covering a distance of 180 km would start fom Istana Flintstone, Mersing to Kota Tinggi. It would then continue to Kulai and end at Ulu Tebrau near Johor Bahru and Kembara Mahkota Johor was finished their journey at Pelangi Palace.

Time to Celebrate the Grandest and Most Anticipated Festival in Johor Bahru!


The annual celebration of the Chingay Festival marks the end of Chinese New Year and is celebrated by almost 50,000 people in one place together! 


It is event the most colorful, most exciting and liveliest festival, but it is celebrated as a way of asking for the blessing and a prosperous year from the deities . The series of activities of Chingay Festival 2020 is already laid out, let us learn more about it!

Johor Chingay Street Parade, annually celebrated by people of Johor Bahru


The Chingay Parade in Johor Bahru has a 140-year history and the celebrations are on a large scale as compared to those in the neighbouring Singapore. You’ll be awed by a mix of acrobatic performances and the brightly decorated floats during the grand parade.


Traditionally, it is only celebrated by the Chinese but nowadays you will see other races joining in the celebration. The parade is part of the Chinese New Year festivities and it is executed to commemorate the birthdays of Chinese deities in Malaysia.


As always, there will be a series of activities for five days for the ancient temple tour 2020. Those will be the following; The lighting ceremony, street cleansing and mounting of the Gods on sedans, coming out of the Gods, God's night tour and the return of the Gods. These will be held in different days and times of the day. Let us learn the details each of them.

Lighting ceremony 

Date       : February 11, 2020 (Tuesday) 18th Day of the Lunar New Year
Time          : 7:00 pm 
Viewpoint  : To officially mark the beginning of celebration, there is an opening ceremony called Lighting Ceremony held on the evening of the 18th day of Lunar calendar. Traditional performance, firecrackers, and fireworks are everywhere! Every year, the lighting ceremony is becoming more and more exciting than the past years.

Street Cleansing Ceremony and Mounting of Deities on Sedans

Date         : February 12, 2020 (Wednesday) 19th Day of the Lunar New Year
Time         : 11:00 am
Location   : Main streets of Johor Bahru
Viewpoint : The streets which are included in the routes for the deities' tour are symbolically cleansed in the washing ceremony by devotees. They are accompanied by loud music from gongs, cymbals and drums, which is intended to ward off evil spirits. Also, it is believe that it will rain on the cleansing ceremony and that will properly clean the streets. Once the cleansing ceremony is done, then it is time to prepare the deities for the journey. They are carefully dressed and then mounted on their divine sedans, where they will be placed as a journey around the city. 

Deities' First Coming Out

Date     : February 13, 2020 (Thursday) 20th Day of the Lunar New Year
Time        : 11:00 am
Location  : From the Johor Temple to the Yixing Road Palace
Viewpoint: After the preparation, the deities are then taken out of the temple for the people to see. The first out of Gods are important to them and they make sure to get a glimpse or take a shot of this moment, that is why huge crowd is expected to gather here. The five deities are lined in order, prior the parade proper.

God's Night Tour

Date         : February 14, 2020 (Friday) 21st Day of the Lunar New Year
Time             : 6:00 pm
Location   : Around the entire city of Johor Bahru, approximately 8 kilometers
Viewpoint    : Minutes before 7:00 in evening, there are lion and dragon dancers, giant dolls, giant floats, loud music, waving flags and all the people who will join the most awaited highlight of the festival, the Chingay night parade. It is a tradition with a belief that deities are carried round the streets of Johor Bahru, and they will bless the whole city with luck, prosperity, and harmony. The sedan chairs of the deities are wildly rock every now and then, with a loud of utterance of "heng-ah" and "huat-ah" for good luck! Once the deities pass by them, people clasp their hands and pray.

Return of the Gods

Date       : February 15, 2020 (Saturday) 22nd Day of the Lunar New Year
Time         : 11:00 am
Location  : From the Yixing Road Palace back to Johor Temple
Viewpoint : After the parade is over, the deities will now be brought back to the old temple by the devotees. Like their first coming out, the return of the gods are accompanied by loud music and cheering crowd. One by one, the deities are returned to the old temple and once of all of them have returned properly, the celebration is officially over.

DURIANS FESTIVAL


Durian seasons is here! It's raining durian.

Talk about durians, most people would think about Segamat durians. It has been an extraordinary season for the king of fruit in this district.


Johorean celebrated their love affair with the king of fruits by participating in durian-themed activities at Kampung Abdullah in Segamat. 

These three-day carnival will feature a variety of programs such as durian and local fruit eating festivals, durian bazaar sales, durian swaphotos, durian competitions and durian races will be held in addition for automotif and cultural performance. The team of the event is 'Everything Durian'.

Festival theme "Everything Durian" will becoming surprise to all the visitors where the visitors were presented with a variety of activities related to Durian such as Durian contest, a very special sale durians which durian price is less than the market price as well as many other interesting activities.


For the durian eating competition, each family represented by one parent and two children where they have to eat as much durians as they could withing seven minutes.


A dozen families competed, with the adults tasked to open the fruits using a parang, while all three in team would eat as much durian as they could. 

The teams competed enthusiastically with children as young as two years old devouring the creamy fruit one after another. They guzzled down mineral water provided before stuffing their mouths with more fruit.



Judges weighed the durians before and after the allocated time to ascertain how much was consumed by each team.


Other activities, there are also have durians colouring competition and lecture by experts on how to cultivate Musang King Durian commercially.

These festival was organized is to find and expand Johor durian breeding collections and list potential National Crop varieties to be developed and commercialized internationally.

Johor is the largest durian producer in the country followed by Pahang and Sarawak with an area of 15,630 hectares with production value of 692,464 tonnes in 2017. Segamat is Johor's largest producer of 4,372 hectares of crop area and production value of 10,546 tonnes in 2017 followed by Muar, Tangkak and Batu Pahat.

PASIR GUDANG WORLD KITE FESTIVAL


The Most Awaited Event of The Year!




Pasir Gudang World Kite Festival is a prestigious annual event and had been listed in Johor Tourism Calendar in Particular and Malaysia in general. The well success festival is organized since 1995 by Pasir Gudang Municipal Council (MPPG) with the cooperation of Johor Tourism Department, Johor Art and Cultural Department and Johor Kite Association.



The five-day festival will see the participation of hundreds kite enthusiasts. Kites in various shape, size and color.


Participants from 40 countries will showcase their kites to the public. You do not need to be a participant to be part of the festival as it is open to everyone. Most of the kites are of animation characters, animals and superheroes. So, kids sure to be delighted. Malaysia's own traditional kites can also be seen during the festival



Approximately more than 1000 participants have registered for this festival ranging from all categories. There are more than 200 participants hailing from 45 countries such as Colombia, UAE, Bulgaria, Hungary and Venezuela are joining.

To further enliven the festival, there will be 300 vendors with an array of merchandises and cultural night shows.

Who doesn't love seeing all the bright colors of the rainbow fill the skies in different shapes and sizes. I had the opportunity to attend this Pasir Gudang World Kite festival many times and also get a chance in visiting the Kite Museum on the occasion 24th International Kite Festival organized by Kite Museum and Pasir Gudang Authority.
